We raise meat animals outdoors on pasture and in the woods. We regularly move our animals to fresh pasture so they can forage in fresh vegetation. Our goal is to partner with our animals to improve soil fertility on the farm. We feed our pigs and chickens a locally-sourced, non-GMO, soy-free feed mix containing mostly wheat and field peas.
In the wild, these animals do not stay in one spot but roam from place to place. We try to mimic this natural movement with our animals. Doing so provides them a richer and healthier life. This results in better-tasting and healthier meat products. Animals raised on pasture generally have a healthier ratio of "good" fats like Omega 3's. Our chickens get to be on our all-natural pasture all day, every day, as soon as they are old enough to spend the night outdoors. To keep them safe from hawks and other predators we shelter the chickens in open-air mobile coops with no floors but sturdy wire mesh sides and a covered roof. The chickens are always on grass but are protected from predators overhead and on all sides. The birds have more forage space inside their protected shelter than we understand is required by either the Animal Welfare Approved standard or the Certified Humane standard for free range or pastured poultry. We move the mobile coops to fresh grass every day so the chickens have fresh plants and bugs to scratch and eat and their manure has time to naturally fertilize our pasture.
These chickens are flavorful and, we find, have a pleasant "bite": not overly chewy, but more meaty in texture than most store-bought chicken.
In addition to pasture forage we provide the chickens a non-GMO, corn-and-soy-free chicken feed from Mosaic Farms, a local Oregon livestock feed supplier.

We raise our pigs outdoors in the forest and blackberry thickets and pasture edges on our farm. We give them fresh water, shelter, and lots of room to run around and root in the dirt. As they root and forage, they help clear out invasive blackberry and turn over forest litter to preserve and improve the health of our soil and the mixed species forest on the farm. We rotate them periodically into new areas to give the pigs something new to explore and to give time for their manure to naturally fertilize the soil.
Pasture-raised pork fat contains a high concentration of monunsaturated fatty acids, the same heart-healthy fat as in olive oil. Pigs raised outdoors store naturally-produced vitamin D in their fat. Great nutrition for overcast Oregon winters! The Old Spot heritage pigs we raise produce exceptionally good fat, which is extraordinarily delicious and helps to the pork juicy and tender when cooked.
This is not “the other white meat”. Our pork is marbled, juicy, and full of rich flavor that comes through in the pork fat. We understand tastes vary, and we think the best flavor comes from well-marbled pork with plenty of pork fat. If you prefer leaner pork, there are other local farms producing heritage pig breeds with less marbling that still have better flavor and nutrition than anything you will find at a supermarket.

We planted an additional 15 acres of pasture in autumn 2018 and have been fertilizing our previously-planted pasture with chicken manure (from our chickens) for the past two years. When the grass is ready, and not before, we will be adding sheep, cows, geese, and possibly goats to the farm.
